Position Purpose:
This position will work on a variety of geologic and hydrogeologic projects.
The following are examples of duties to which this position may be assigned.
preparation of maps, charts, and cross sections for publication and use
by Geological Survey personnel, government, and the general public. This
will involve the application of proper techniques using ArcGIS software;
edit and format maps, cross sections, charts, etc. produced by Geological
Survey personnel that result from geologic and aquifer mapping projects.
This work will be performed using ArcGIS software and in a geologic context
to ensure that the product is cartographically and scientifically correct;
perform the duties of a rig-side geologist, describe the cuttings or core
obtained from test drilling, and perform down-hole geophysical logging;
compilation of existing surface geologic information at 1:250,000 scale
for western South Dakota; assisting with the mapping and field checking
of surface geology for various Geological Survey projects; digitization
of geology at various scales using ArcGIS software.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
geologic principles;
geologic mapping;
construction of cross
sections, structure-contour maps, isopach maps, and geologic maps;
South Dakota’s surface
and subsurface geology;
report writing.
Ability to:
use geologic field instruments, interpret field data, and prepare reports;
read, interpret, and use maps, plans, charts, and related graphic material
associated with geologic studies and investigations;
organize, analyze, and present technical data effectively;
communicate information clearly and concisely;
establish and maintain effective working relationships;
use ArcGIS software to analyze geologic information and create publication
quality layouts;
use a global positioning system (GPS) receiver to navigate and collect
field data.
Comments: A masters
degree in geology or closely related field is preferred.
Some travel will be required, including overnight stays.
Some physical labor may be required including assisting with drilling
and well installation activities of the Geological Survey and the occasional
lifting of up to 100 pounds. Field work in extreme hot and cold weather
conditions may be required. Hiking for extended periods of time over variable
terrain may be required for the mapping of surface geology.
The successful applicant does not need to have a Commercial
Driver’s License at the time of hiring but must acquire one within
the first 6 months of employment in order to be capable of supporting
the Geological Survey’s drilling activities as needed. Employee
will be subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable-suspicion, post-accident,
follow up, and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing.
