December 2006 AIPG Presidents’ Message
A very good year; Better luck next
year
In my final President’s Message, I had planned to write an extended
treatise on the measures I would liked to have accomplished this year
that got waylaid by hosting the 2006 AIPG Annual Meeting in St. Paul,
Minnesota. However as I procrastinated in committing cursor to screen,
I found the notion of cleaning the closets horribly unappealing. Therefore
I am left to a speedy “graceful” exit, leaving the hard
chores and undefined challenges for the next president to unravel. Suffice
it to say – as all sunset messages go – I really would liked
to have accomplished more.
But before taking my leave it’s very important
to give folks a pat on the back for all that really was accomplished
this year. The Executive Committee remained well focused and usually
in full agreement on our commitments to assuring a successful Annual
Meeting while still carrying on our regular business. Keith Rapp was
always there for advice and action as the seasoned past-president. Pat
Terhaar served ably as vice president, keeping the monthly speaking
schedule on track when I was too often distracted by other tasks. Trey
Howard was unflaggingly diligent in maintaining the books for both the
Annual Meeting and the Section. Venerable veterans Jane Willard and
Bruce Johnson helped keep the ship on-course. I have full confidence
that incoming president Damon Powers will run the organization admirably
in 2007.
Our Annual Meeting Co-Chairs Jane Willard & Mike
Ruddy wrapped up several years of committed planning efforts with a
highly successful conference – both professionally and financially
– that also attained a high fun quotient. The rest of the core
planning team included Curt Hudak, Jennifer Wolff, Bruce Johnson, Kate
Kleiter, Audrey Van Cleve, Rob Heimbach, Anne Tiller, Keith Rapp, Mike
Hultgren, Scott Wolter, Ernie Lehmann, Harvey Thorleifson, and yours
truly. Many volunteers came on board to pull off the whole shebang.
The shear amount of dedication from all these individuals made the Annual
Meeting happen, and I am grateful to every one of them.
As the wheel turns and we enter a New Year, let us
all reevaluate what we each have to offer. AIPG can always use help
to accomplish our mission of insuring professionalism, educating the
public, and enhancing the value of geology and geologists. Many hands
make light work. Please consider what you can do to make our organization
even better. I’m glad I did.
Sincerely,
Charlie Tiller,
