In Situ Bioremediation Using Vegetable Oil Emulsions
and Colloidal Insoluble Buffers
Abstract
The use of vegetable oil as an electron donor for anaerobic bioremediation
has been explored since the early 1990s. However, neat vegetable oil can
be difficult to inject and distribute effectively in the subsurface. Preparing
oil-in-water emulsions in the field improved the effectiveness of vegetable
oil, but only with the development of small droplet factory manufactured
emulsions has the technology seen widespread use. RNAS was the first company
to offer a kinetically stable sub-micron vegetable oil emulsion in 2002.
By 2008 commercial emulsions had been applied to hundreds of sites and
millions of pounds of vegetable oil have been effectively injected. An
overview of the use of vegetable oil emulsions to address contaminated
ground water will be presented. Another common challenge in anaerobic
bioremediation is maintaining neutral pH in poorly buffered soils and
ground water. The addition of electron donor often reduces the ground
water pH below optimal conditions for microbial activity. The use of colloidal
insoluble buffers offers a unique solution to this problem. An overview
of colloidal buffer technologies will be presented.
Biography
Bill Newman is the founder and president of Remediation
and Natural Attenuation Services, Inc. Bill’s experience includes
work as a bioremediation specialist and environmental chemist, developing
and marketing products for bioremediation, and providing technical support
for these products. He has more than 20 years experience in bioremediation
consulting, specializing in the evaluation of natural attenuation, and
the design, installation, and monitoring of remediation systems. Mr. Newman’s
inventions and products include a low-cost oxygenation system for aerobic
bioremediation (US patent #6,561,497), methods for manufacturing and injecting
small droplet edible oil emulsions for anaerobic bioremediation (US patent
#6,806,078), and development of colloidal insoluble buffer systems (patent
pending).
